Southern Metropolitan Regional Championships
(LAANSW Region No 3)
To explain, LAANSW conducts five Regional Carnivals across NSW and entry is only by qualifying at one of the 24 earlier Zone Carnivals. We participate in the Inner City Zone Carnival against five local clubs (See "Zone Results" on the menu alongside) and from there, the first four athletes in each event progress to the Regional Carnival. There they compete against similar qualifiers from 34 nearby clubs in the Southern Metropolitan Region (No 3) Carnival. Our Zone is arguably the most competitve in NSW and just to get to the Regional Carnival should be regarded as a compliment to the athlete's ability.
The clubs we compete against are:- Mid West Metropolitan Zone - Bankstown (Centre No 5), Everley Park (64), Fairfield (18), Girraween (51), Greystanes (39), Holroyd (6), Smithfield (146), Tiger West (68); Southern Metropolitan Zone – Helensburgh (44), Illawong (70), Port Hacking (110), Revesby Workers (136), St George (9), Sutherland (11); South West Metropolitan Zone – Ambarvale (58), Camden (61), Campbelltown Collegians (36), Douglas Park (179), Escol Park (202), Ingleburn (37).

The 2006-07 Southern Metropolitan Region Carnival

Of our 48 athletes who qualified  at Zone for the Regional Carnival, 9 progressed through to the State Carnival at Homebush, March 17 & 18. A magificent achievement. Two of them, Tom and Rifat, qualified for all four of their events. How good is that? Our Junior Boys Relay team came 1st while the SB team also qualified. Despite vigorous protests, our Junior Girls team, which won at Zone, was disqualified days later on a technicality, long after the team had been accepted and then allowed to run. There’s something wrong with a system that treats kids that way.
Our 2007 State qualifers are:- B10 Tom Lorkin (60H, 70m, 100m, 200m); B11 JP Curran (400m, 800m); G11 Tiana Penitani (100m, 200m, LJ), Georgie Hatch (60H, HJ); B12 Rifat Ryan (60H, 100m, 200m, LJ); Oscar People (100m, 200m), Ben Gordon (60H); B13 Zac Rea (800m 1500m); G15 Charlie Wadsworth (60H, 200H).
